Strength
Weaknesses
- Sentinel’s weakness lies in its current marketing bandwidth. While most of the team are developers, the official marketing team is quite small, and additional people are required. In a personal conversation with the Sentinel team, they have mentioned that they are addressing it not only by getting other people on-board but are working on partnering with communities that already exist and thereby can potentially evangelize offerings.
- It seems like the team hasn’t really worked on the user experience for their products. Although the current products work, they still pose a significant barrier to entry for people that are new to the crypto/blockchain ecosystem in general.
Opportunities
- A competitive advantage for Sentinel is in the market-size and the potential to capitalize on utilizing the decentralized infrastructure to solve problems for personal and enterprise security.
- As per the team, the current work on dVPN is to demonstrate the ability of the network to handle resources and, in future development applications like dChat, dStorage, etc. that work utilizing features of the Sentinel Network.
- Sentinel team talks about the opportunity for Sentinel to not just develop applications on top of the network but to enable FOSS developers to utilize the network as a marketplace to run their FOSS apps. This way, FOSS developers can choose to run their services/applications on top of the Sentinel Network and offer them to the network in various models, including, but not limited to fixed fees, pre-paid recurring billing, etc.
Threats
- Competitors flooding the market and projects like Orchid either make or break the dVPN/privacy industry. Although Orchid Protocol hasn’t made much progress in correlation with the hype it received, the project and others that have raised more than Sentinel can grab a piece of the pie that Sentinel has been working for.
- Weaknesses in terms of being able to define a Product User Experience that reduces friction and kick starts network effects/activity is much needed to ensure the network scales to the next level.

What is Sentinel
Based on interoperable blockchain technology, Sentinel Network aims to utilize multiple chains to create a decentralized solution for resource sharing withgovernance and fair incentivization.
As team stated on their AMA, “Sentinel is a distributed Resources and Services marketplace with bandwidth as the first resource and dVPN as the first dApp or Service running on the Sentinel Network. There are additional Services like Sentinel dChat, aka Sentrix that utilize both storage and bandwidth on the Sentinel Network.”
So far, the project focused on blockchain-based decentralized VPN/Security Suite project. dVPN is the project’s first & flagship dAPP, and it is based on a peer to peer technology. It means that the network runs because of people's support - no central server. They aim to step away from centralized servers and build something that can not be monitored by governments. To achieve this, they realized early that they need to incentivize people who share unused bandwidth with dVPN customers.
dVPN allows a person to use the VPN service or help the VPN by sharing unused bandwidth with other people in the network. If you host a Service Node for the dVPN service (contribute network bandwidth and other resources by hosting), you can monetize your resources & earn SENT.
We used Sentinel dVPN (available on Google Play) for over 12 hours without any service interruption back in Q4 2019. You can find Windows, Linux & Mac clients here.
Technology
Sentinel makes use of a multi-chain architecture to ensure that there is a secure exchange of resources - bandwidth/data for now & computing with storagein future - between people and the various applications. This network employs a three chain architecture to ensure complete privacy to the user's data. Due to this multi-layer architecture, the Sentinel network can solve the problems concerning scaling.
The Identity and Anonymous User ID chain (AUID)
This is the chain that stores the Anonymous User ID of all users. The identity chain makes allows users to access all the Services/dApps on the Sentinel network by interacting with other chains either part of Sentinel network or not. Each UID on the identity chain is assigned a specific reputation score based on the behavior of the person on the network. Having a good reputation score helps the users to contribute & earn from the Sentinel network itself.
Sentinel Service Chain
This is the chain where all the Services/dApps of the Sentinel Network are hosted. The Sentinel community develops these products and make use of the various protocols and the Sentinel SDK to help them function.
Sentinel Transaction chain
This chain is responsible for handling all the transactions on the Sentinel Network. All transactions are tied to your User ID (that is registered on the Identity chain) and the linked wallet. As this chain makes use of the AUID, no user data is transmitted. Thus, ensuring complete user privacy.
Currently, whenever a transaction is made on this chain, a smart contract that has been programmed in Solidity is automatically executed, and the specific service is launched.
This chain makes use of a master node system to secure the transactions on the network. By using this validation mechanism, all transactions on this chain are swift and, at the same time, very cheap.
In the future, on Sentinel's MainNet, these payments securely happen based on a Hub-Zone system where the Hub handles payments, and individual Zones run various Services. Users send tokens into a Zone, only if you want to access the Service.
The beauty of this network is in the ability to accept not just Sentinel's $SENT token but multiple tokens - PIVX, BNB, or any token that the Nodes of the Service/dApp are willing to accept. This enables Service Providers a greater choice in attracting users and also will develop user base for the Sentinel Network. This helps Sentinel to be able to offer Services/dApps a universal platform - not just for one network/chain, but for any network.
Target Audience
Sentinel Network’s current implementation of the protocol, the Sentinel dVPN, is on the testnet and has facilitated the exchange of over 210TB of bandwidth through the network. This validates the case for anyone looking for privacy to navigate the internet using Sentinel’s dVPN.
On mainnet, Sentinel’s implementation will with multiple crypto-currencies and utilizes the Cosmos IBC (Inter Blockchain Communication) Protocol to facilitate payment to Service Providers by Consumers.
Sentinel’s upcoming (in Feb/March) Private Nets are also a critical feature that will enable adoption of the network and its functions within organizations, communities, networks, and enterprises.
Private Nets will be an integral part of Sentinel and will enable organizations and communities to utilize the power of the blockchain for monetization of bandwidth without any geographic barrier.
Product
Distributed system
The entire Sentinel network is distributed, and all the data is not available on a single node. This decentralized system provides a very high degree of security to its users. By using the BFT type of consensus mechanism, the network can fully function even when 1/3rd of the Service Nodes stop working. Additionally, any attack on the Sentinel network will automatically trigger a scaling and relocation of the nodes. It also isolates the affected nodes, thereby stopping the spread of failing nodes on the network.
User-friendly SDK
The Sentinel SDK that enables developers to develop on the network is very user-friendly. Thus, encouraging more developers to create new products and services for the network. This also facilitates quick testing and implementation while being inexpensive at the same time. As the resources are provided by the Service Nodes, the cost for these resources becomes distributed & very low. Thus, helping developers bring more products to the Sentinel Network.
A single client to connect to all services
Users can connect to the first Service on the Sentinel network, the Sentinel dVPN, and other Services in the future by making use of a single client such as their mobile phone or even their PC. A user who wishes to become a service node can do so and earn SENT tokens based on their reputation on the network.
Several products and services have been built on the Sentinel network that makes use of these features. They are:
Sentrix
Sentrix helps to establish decentralized communication and runs powered by the Matrix communication protocol on the Sentinel network. It is comprised of Decentralized chat and Decentralized VoIP. All interaction happens in a p2p decentralized manner with complete control of a user's data. All messages on Sentrix can be chosen to have a finite lifetime. Once this limit is reached, the messages are deleted from all the nodes on the network. This, coupled with the decentralized nature of the nodes, provides users complete privacy.
Swixer - Swaps with Mixer
Even with the current state of decentralized networks, cryptocurrency transactions can still be traced back to its user. This factor goes directly against the primary motive of cryptocurrency, which is privacy. The Swixer Swap Mixer helps users achieve precisely that. By using Swixer, users can swap their tokens to any other cryptocurrency by making use of Ethereum’s cross-chain swap mechanism. As this mechanism makes use of the zero-knowledge protocol, tracking user's transactions on the decentralized Sentinel network becomes next to impossible. This has been released on ETH and after testing has been taken down to release a version on Tendermint after Sentinel's main net.
Use case
- Sentinel’s token secures the network utilizing the tokens and stake within the network to determine voting power.
- Sentinel’s investors can delegate/bond tokens to their favorite community member (that is running a validator) and participate in securing the network as well as earn rewards for delegated/bonded tokens.
- Currently, the Sentinel Turing Testnet token will be utilized for the exchange of bandwidth through the Sentinel dVPN on desktop initially and later on mobile.
- Sentinel’s investors can participate in network governance by holding the Sentinel Network (SENT) token.
- Sentinel’s current ERC20 token will be swapped with the mainnet token.

Sentinel's social presence is relatively weak. Only 2.8 K members in the Telegram channel. The admins are responsive and there is active discussion. Their 3.4 K followers on Twitter have a low engagement rate. They have only 232 people on their Discord.
